Gertie held her hand out one thousand feet above
I was at the bottom of the well.
Climbing up to where she was took such a long, long time
by the time that I could see her, she was saving someone else.

The light of burning chances made a picture, clear and plain
and lit her shape against the painted sky.
To punctuate the signing over of my final claim,
I shouted out a message to her, "Gertie, don't you cry."

It was just a fantasy
that we'd live the life we please.
It was never going to be.

The sunlight made it's way into the grave that was my life,
and I could hear her singing from outside.
Climbing up to where she was, I caught a single word.
By the time that I could see her, I was sure it was "goodbye".
