I had a list of the promises I broke
you said we'd bury
when the ground between us thawed

All along the way, only promises I made
when I was angry
were the ones I held fast on

We chased after a treasure
at the bottom of a lake where we will drown
so we could hold onto the damage like a keepsake we brought home
and just preserve it until time to pass it down
How can we turn around?

I had a list of the secrets I kept
and the lies we told
to keep our heads above

an empty place within, where the saints all fell to sin
was it worth the nightmares,
only to be loved

We stepped out into nothing
but I never thought the wings would really fly
or that we'd fight over the misery like some trophy we both won
and never speak 'til it was time to say "goodbye"
